NICE Course on Anxiety Disorder – Completed
I completed the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence training course aimed at GPs and other healthcare professionals. This was actually quite easy to do. I even had a very good grasp of the section on medication. A very high percentage of the people that come to see me are already on SSRIs’ It is to their credit that they are taking proactive steps to manage their anxiety which can ultimately lead to them managing their stress at manageable levels. “But I’m not stressed – I’m anxious” I hear you say. Anxiety is a symptom of stress and it is due to the fight or flight response. You are producing adrenaline and stress hormones such as cortisol. If this persists it tends to cause the brain to absorb Serotonin – your happy mood hormone and most Doctors will prescribe SSRI’s Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Some of these have had some very bad press lately when people have tried to wean themselves off them. You should of course discuss what action you should take with your doctor but exercise, nutrition, balanced lifestyle, Meditation, Relaxation, Mindfulness and Hypnosis can all play a part. If you struggle to be mindful, to meditate or to relax then hypnotherapy can help with all of these.
